Slots: A Gambler’s Deception

While no one has uncovered the Platonic ideal of a slot machine, certain principles undergird most games. The first criterion is to pique the player’s interest. The machines must be loud and flashy, and feature familiar characters and themes that appeal to the player’s sense of nostalgia or culture. They also need to be able to produce a large number of possible outcomes.

Modern slots fulfill these criteria with random-number generators (RNG) that cycle thousands of numbers each second. The spinning reels are largely for show; the actual symbols on a single reel only appear about 30 times in a thousand spins. The computer determines the odds of hitting a particular symbol, and the symbols on the payline are weighted to compensate for this. This results in near-misses that make players keep pushing the lever, despite the fact that they have no hope of winning.

To keep the gamblers coming back, designers have adapted some of the techniques used in virtual gaming to slot machines. Video monitors, 3D graphics, and multi-level games have all made their way into the slot world. In addition, designers have taken on a pop-culture persona in order to appeal to younger players.
